Description
Job Purpose
The Skills Development Officer is responsible for improving shopfloor capability through practical, on-the-job training, coaching, and competency assessments. The role ensures employees consistently apply safe work practices, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality standards while supporting continuous improvement in productivity, quality, and safety.
The incumbent will work closely with Production, Foremen, and the Training Coordinator to identify competency gaps, implement employee development plans, and maintain accurate training records.
Roles and Responsibilities
Practical Training and Coaching
• Deliver structured on-the-job training and coaching to shopfloor employees.
• Conduct practical competency assessments and provide ongoing feedback.
• Support the onboarding of new employees and facilitate cross-training where required.
• Reinforce correct operating procedures and manufacturing best practices.
Standards, Quality and Safety
• Ensure employees understand and comply with work instructions, quality standards, and safety procedures.
• Identify and correct deviations from prescribed work methods.
• Promote a culture of quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
• Support investigations where training deficiencies contribute to incidents or quality issues.
Employee Development
• Identify skills and competency gaps in collaboration with Production Management.
• Implement and monitor Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for shopfloor employees.
• Recommend refresher training and development opportunities to improve employee competence and versatility.
Training Administration
Working closely with the Training Coordinator:
• Maintain shop floor training records and competency matrices.
• Submit practical assessment results and training reports.
• Ensure employee development plans are updated and monitored.
Continuous Improvement
• Assist the foreman in identifying training needs arising from production, quality, and safety performance.
• Recommend and implement training interventions that improve operational performance.
• Support foremen in developing coaching skills and building team capability.
Qualifications and experience
▪ National Diploma or Trade Qualification in Foundry Management, Metallurgical, Production, Engineering, or a related field.
▪ Assessor and/or OD ETDP qualification will be an advantage.
▪ Minimum five (5) years' experience in a foundry or heavy manufacturing environment.
▪ At least three (3) years' experience in workplace training, coaching, or technical skills development.
▪ Sound understanding of foundry production processes and manufacturing standards.
Salary - R450 000 - R600 000pa
